Fantastic Voyage started out as an idea while one night I was writing a bunch of crazy ideas and activities in a notebook. One of these ideas was to start a pirate radio station in which I, the DJ, was a “time and space traveller.” I spent a few weeks taking notes of all of experiences I, the time and space traveller, could talk about while introducing people to music.
In between writing hypothetical backstories and tangents, I was making a rather large playlist of songs that were “spacey” to me. Qualifications for the songs were quite vague, yet simple. The songs had to fit at least any one of the following categories:
1. Mention a celestial body.
2. Have a celestial name.
3. Sample or mention a sci-fi movie or character.
At some point this writing exercise and music exploration became an obsession and a spot came open at WAYO in Rochester. I applied to become a DJ and got a spot on Sundays from 4pm to 5pm. I didn’t keep my time and space traveller backstory.
In making this website, I hope to review some of the music I play on the station, document some of the current space exploration events and talk about other spacey topics. Since I only have an hour on the radio, this website will serve as an extension to the radio show.
